Bats

There are over 24 species of bats that live in California. The most common is the Mexican Free Tail Bat. Bats play a vital role in the checks and balances of nature. In California they are a protected species, meaning they cannot be killed. There are very strict rules regarding the relocation of bats and should only be done by a professional.

BatThe Mexican Free Tail Bat is the most common bat in Central California. Their natural roost is in caves; however, they are often found roosting in buildings, under bridges and in various other man-made structures. Mexican Free Tail Bats are small, weighing only about ½ ounce with a wing span of 12 to 14 inches. They are strong fliers, able to reach speeds of 60 mph and cover a distance of 50 miles from their roost. The majority of Mexican Free Tail Bats migrate south for the winter, although some will stay and hibernate. These bates are dark brown or dark grey in color. They eat insects such as mosquitoes, moths, beetles and leafhoppers. They have a lifespan of approximately 15 years. Each female has only one pup that is born in late spring or early summer.
